Maeari Chwitadae is a traditional Korean marching band formed in 2026 and based in the New York and New Jersey area. Bringing together musicians dedicated to Korean traditional performing arts, the ensemble introduces audiences to the powerful sounds, pageantry, and ceremonial spirit of Chwitadae, Korea’s historic military and royal processional music.
During the Joseon Dynasty, Chwitadae ensembles played an important role in heralding royal processions and other significant ceremonial occasions. Their commanding music announced the arrival of royal and official processions while creating an atmosphere of dignity, grandeur, and celebration. Characterized by the striking combination of traditional Korean wind and percussion instruments, Chwitadae music is both visually impressive and unmistakable in sound.
Drawing inspiration from this centuries-old tradition, Maeari Chwitadae seeks to bring the majesty and elegance of Korea’s historic royal marching bands to contemporary audiences.
